How is the IELTS Overall Band Score Calculated?

The overall IELTS band score is the average of the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The scores are weighted equally. The average is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

• Rounding up: If the average ends in .25, the overall score is rounded up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5).
• Rounding up to whole: If the average ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0).
• Rounding down: If the average ends in a fraction below .25 or .75, it is rounded down (e.g., 6.1 becomes 6.0).
