About the Hijri Calendar
The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual fasting period (Ramadan) and the proper time for the Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).
The calendar began its epoch (year 1 AH) with the Hijrah—the migration of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
Note on Visibility:The Islamic date begins at sunset, not at midnight. Furthermore, the exact start of a new month relies on the physical sighting of the moon (Ru'yat-e-Hilal) in your local region.
